This is a new style of knife for soft goods - targeted at summer watermelon. You can slice into the melon without a sharp knife, making uniform pieces. You can flip over the slicer and it becomes tongs to extract the melon piece. Then, in tongs position, you can further slice your watermelon into position by just using the curved edge like a knife. It definitely works better on larger melons that are ripe and it takes a little getting used to but it's a cool tool once you get the hang of it. This is an awesome tool for other soft rectangular or square cooking shapes. Particularly good for people who want to live a little but don't need a huge portion of sweets. It slices sheet cake beautifully, brownies, lemon bars, date squares, blondies. It cuts jello pieces into perfect uniform lengths (or adult Jello shots). You can also use this for soft foods in a baking pan like cornbread or egg dishes, bisquick casseroles or coffee cake. For entertaining, you can easily create narrow bite-sized uniform pieces. A melon baller is a must for any ornamental presentation of fruit. Its a great gadget to prepare for summer parties or potlucks. This baller is simple enough but well made. Other ballers on the market are designed in such as way that dishwasher water seeps into the handle. Not this one. Both items are dishwasher safe. The slicer has a great grip. A lot of these gadgets online are cheaply made. I went through a ton of manufacturers before I found one who could make this with great quality. Others break. My sample has been a workhorse.
